What is Chatline?

Chatline is a student-run online extension of McGill Students’ Nightline. It is a confidential, anonymous, and non-judgmental instant messaging service. Chatters will be connected to one of our volunteers through an anonymous platform. Our volunteers are trained in active listening and crisis management, and can provide information, referrals, and more. Everyone is welcome to use Chatline.

With the start of the new semester, we are working on improving our service to make sure we are as helpful as possible to the people who get in touch with us. This means that, for now, our Chatline service is closed.

We realize this might be a disappointment. If you’ve come here looking for support, it must be hard to read this message. We wish we could be available to speak with you, and we’re working on that.

In the meantime, we want to share some options that might be helpful for you to look into.

Our phone lines are operating on our usual schedule, from 6pm – 3am every night. Please feel free to give us a call at 514-398-6246 if you’d like to speak with one of our volunteers over the phone.

We would also like to note that if you are having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, we urge you to call 911.

We would also recommend that you take a look at these other resources and phone lines. If you are looking for an online space to chat, the above list includes a section for online messaging services.
